My little son Jack's favorite cartoon and story characters.
The selection below contains the classic Disney animations, the original Milne books (with
"Classic Pooh" illustrations), as well as a selection of modern (Disney)
adaptaions. The originals and faithful adaptations are timeless classics for children,
gentle, inoffensive humor and very mild, unobtrusive moral instruction. Mostly great
entertainment for children that parents don't have to worry about. Be advised
that Walt Disney, Inc., a big corporation primarily interested in making money, owns the
rights to Winnie-the-Pooh, and they get to do what they want with it, but so far the only
real messes they have made with the original, charming concept are to write new, often
dumb, books, cartoons and stories involving the characters. I've tried to include
only the quality products, and have avoided some of the more mindless modern rip-offs
(unless there is some educational purpose served - see reviews and commentary below). In a
few cases, I included stuff that is of less-than-stellar quality, and made my reservations
plain in my review. I have read the reviews by other parents and take their views into
account to help decide what to offer and what needs to be mentioned in each review. Thus,
not all of these are my recommendations - if the parents didn't trash a particular product
(much) and I felt it is an improvement over letting the little ones watch unfiltered
network TV (yargh!), for example, I included it. It is my feeling that
parents can and should find alternatives to letting their kids watch network (including
cable and satellite) TV. There are some toys included in the selection
below.
Please note that the new links to Amazon's pages (served by Amazon, not my
webserver) sometimes show a generic Amazon link (orange, animated, with "Shop now and SAVE"
alternating with a list of product categories) instead of a specific link to the product
page. If you click on this link, you will wind up at a generic Amazon page designed
to sell other products. Just hit the REFRESH or RELOAD button on your browser and you
should get the specific product link back. You may have to do this twice. I regret this
practice of Amazon's, but I have no control over it. They no longer allow me to make
image links of my own as they did in the past. Also, please note that this is a
very large page with lots of external links and will take some time to load!

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (25th Anniversary Edition) (1977)
Disney's 1977 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh may be the
last word on (animated) Pooh because it so faithfully honors the first word on Pooh,
penned in the 1920s by British storyteller A.A. Milne. Gently paced, subtly humorous, and
blessedly understated, this adaptation reflects Walt Disney's original vision to develop
the beloved British bear for a wider audience. The film is essentially a collection of the
original Pooh shorts, "The Honey Tree," "The Blustery Day," and
"Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too." These storybooks are presented in seamless
"chapters," narrated by the timeless Sebastian Cabot. The familiar musical score
and original voices of Sterling Holloway as Pooh, and Paul Winchell as Tigger, cap this
enchanting keepsake. (Ages 2 and up). --Lynn Gibson

Disney's Learning Adventures - Winnie the Pooh - ABC's
I'm offering only the DVD version of this because apparently only
the DVD contains the whole alphabet. There were some complaints from parents about
the video version. This is not a Milne original, but a modern Disney creation based
on Milne's characters. As such, it is offered with a caveat - this ain't the real
thing, folks. It might be good for helping to teach your child his ABC's, and if
so, then it is valuable. The entertainment value of this product is questionable.

Disney's Learning Adventures - Winnie the Pooh - 123's
Another modern Disney creation that has nothing to do with Milne,
but this one got pretty rave reviews from parents (who were often disappointed with the
ABC's video, see above). A counting video intended to help teach your child the
numbers and how to count. Has definite entertainment as well as educational value.

Piglet's Big Movie (2003)
"Adorable" movie starring Piglet. Another Disney
creation using the Pooh characters. Parents should be advised: near the end of the
movie "for a short period of time the rest of the gang believes that Pooh and Piglet
have fallen to their deaths down a waterfall" and mourn them - some parents don't
like exposing their toddlers even to brief scenes involving supposed death. Could be
a bit heavy for some (although compared with, say Bambi, Sleeping Beauty, All Dogs Go to
Heaven, etc., I suspect this is a fairly common plot device and probably harmless for most
kids).

Growing Up With Winnie the Pooh - A Great Day of Discovery
Another brand new release (2005), also no reviews. Certainly
a Disney creation using Pooh characters. Subject matter: how consideration, responsible
behavior, and a little imagination can lead to wonderful experiences. Review it and let me
know whether it is any good.

|
The Tigger Movie (2000)
Even I like this movie. The action focuses around Tigger's
attempts to find his family and the unforeseen consequences when the other creatures
(Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Kanga, Roo and Rabbit) try to "help". Certainly a
Disney creation using Pooh characters. "The Tigger Movie" is generally suitable
for young children, with only one sequence (of an avalanche), which might upset the
youngest of viewers. A 2000 Parents' Choicer Silver Honor.

Winnie the Pooh - Springtime with Roo (2004)
Rabbit cancels Easter and declares it Spring Cleaning Day.
Non-religious story about Easter. Disney creation using Pooh characters. More

The Book of Pooh - Stories From the Heart (2001)
A cut above typical Disney-generated Pooh due to the writing.
Instead of the standard, rather run-of-the-mill quality of some of the Disney Pooh
products, this one features puppets and computer animation, and comes closer to the subtle
humor and tone of the Milne originals. Surprisingly good for Disney Pooh. I would
love to see more of this caliber of work come out of Disney.

|
Winnie the Pooh - Seasons of Giving (1999)
Three episodes from television Pooh spliced together into a movie.
Stories are generally good, however, be advised that, as a made-for-TV production,
the production quality is not as good as the Pooh stories specifically produced for the
big screen. I believe the television series was called The New Adventures of Winnie
the Pooh. The episodes that were spliced into this movie are: "Groundpiglet's
Day", "A Winnie the Pooh Thanksgiving" (not part of the series, but a TV
special), and "Find Her, Keep Her". The second segment in particular is
good.

Winnie the Pooh - Un-Valentine's Day/A Valentine for You (1995)
Two episodes from TV: "A Valentine For You" and
"Un-Valentine's Day", an episode of the popular "The New Adventures of
Winnie the Pooh" series. See above caveats as to the production quality of
made-for-TV Pooh (but remember that your two-year-old won't care, you might).

|
Winnie the Pooh - Frankenpooh and Spookable Pooh
I had to think a bit before I chose to include this one.
It's pretty lame, made up of 5 shorts, almost certainly made for TV. Supposed to be
70 minutes, actually 60 minutes. I doubt the kids will notice. It's all
themed around Halloween, and is probably not scary enough to be worried about. We
have the Spookable story in book form for my son (now 2), and it is one of my
least favorite books to read to him - it is just lame. Consider this an inclusion for
the sake of kid's entertainment, and abandon expectations of quality - this is video soda
pop, with lots of sugar and food coloring. It'll keep them occupied for an hour
while you get something done, and is better than letting them watch the sick stuff shown
on the Cartoon Network.

Winnie the Pooh and The Honey Tree (1966)

Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too (1974)
Yet another early (1974) Winnie the Pooh short from Disney, this time introducing Tigger, easily the liveliest of the Pooh characters.
Good fun - children love Tigger, and this tale features the rest of the Pooh characters having to adapt to the irrepressible and difficult stuffed
tiger. For that reason, there is a (mild) lesson implied teaching children how to deal with those who are different from themselves and their
familiar friends.

Winnie the Pooh - A Valentine for You (1999)
Unlike the DVD offering above, this video contains only the single short (20 min) named in the title.
A made-for-TV Disney creation. I read complaints that there were enough ads at the beginning to rival the length of the story!
Given the subject matter (Valentine's Day in the Hundred-Acre Wood), I wouldn't expect too much from this apart from entertainment.
At least the content is not offensive, if perhaps a bit on the silly side.

Winnie the Pooh - Un-Valentine's Day (1988)
Same comment with respect to the DVD - this VHS edition contains the named short, and apparently an extra. Rabbit
decides that the animals had given each other too many valentines the previous year. (Pooh in particular went overboard,
giving two valentines for every one he received.) Rabbit tells the animals that Valentine's Day has been canceled. I'll
quote from a kid's review: (no, I did not edit this) "I like "Winnie the Pooh:Un-Valentine's Day"! It's funny and it
also has a extra story,"The three little piglets". Both are really fun! I highly reccomend this video!!!!!"

Winnie-The-Pooh
This is the REAL THING. The original A. A. Milne "Classic Pooh" book illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard.
Be advised that the characters look slightly different from the later Disney versions. I like them better. The humor is wonderfully subtle;
this is the kind of book an adult ENJOYS reading to children, because there is something for the adults, too - subtle humor, good quality stories,
utterly harmless enjoyment. Read this to your children. When they learn to read, they will read it again and again. Highly recommended!

The House at Pooh Corner

When We Were Very Young
Strictly speaking, this is not a Winnie-the-Pooh book. Instead, it is a book of poems for children by Milne
and illustrated by Shepherd, the creators of Classic Pooh. Christopher Robin is in the book, but I don't believe the other Pooh
characters are there. This book of poems is often packaged as part of the Pooh series (see below anthologies of tales and poems
of Pooh). Delightful for all the same reasons Winnie-the-Pooh is delightful, and highly recommended.

The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh
This is the REAL THING. The complete, original A. A. Milne books illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. The illustrations are
beautiful, in color, and are what is now called "Classic Pooh". Be advised that the characters look slightly different from the later Disney
versions. I like them better. The humor is wonderfully subtle; this is the kind of book an adult ENJOYS reading to children, because there
is something for the adults, too (the subtle humor, which is quite likely to be missed by young children). Experience with my own son makes
me think this is better for slightly older children (at two years old, Jack is too impatient to sit still and appreciate the stories). I'd
guess he will start enjoying this at about three or four. Right now, he likes action and animation, and reading him these stories is an exercize
in frustration. This book includes all of the two Pooh books Milne published: "Winnie-the-Pooh" and "The House at Pooh Corner". Apparently,
there were also some poems about Pooh and his friends. The poems are not included in this volume. This is a book you will be able to read to
your children again and again. When they learn to read, they will read it again and again. Highly recommended!

This is the real thing. All the original Pooh tales and poems in a boxed set of four books.
Includes: "Winnie-The-Pooh", "The House at Pooh Corner", "When We Were Very Young" and "Now We Are Six". Illustrated by Shepherd.
Personal note: We have the "Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh", and the only thing I don't like about it is that the book is rather
large and heavy. Not as nice to read to a child in your lap as these smaller books would be. So if you are planning to read to
your kids while they are sitting in your lap, this is the edition to get.

Winnie-the-Pooh (A. A. Milne's Pooh Classics) [UNABRIDGED]
Another unabridged audio CD edition of "Winnie-the-Pooh", read by Peter Dennis. There were no parental reviews
for this particular version. Curiously, the Amazon page makes the following claim: This is the only reading of these immortal stories
authorized by A.A. Miles son, Christopher Robin, who wrote, "Peter Dennis has made himself Poohs Ambassador Extraordinary and no
bear has ever had a more devoted friend. So if you want to meet the real Pooh, the bear I knew, the bear my father wrote about,
listen to Peter." OK. Christopher Robin Milne, who passed away in 1996, had something of an ambivalent relationship with both
Pooh and his father, the author of the stories. Apparently, he had a hard time in school after the stories became best sellers,
and his father did indeed use his real name in the stories, not a wise choice for protecting the privacy of his son. I would
take this recommendation with a grain of salt, particularly since the other unabridged edition above does have good reviews from
parents. Still, as I have not had the chance to personally listen to either edition, I'd rather let parents choose as they wish.

The House at Pooh Corner
I had to do some fairly intense searching to find a stand-alone audio cassette version of "The House at Pooh Corner".
This one is read by David Benedictus. None of the reviews available referred to this edition specifically, so I hope that it is both
good and unabridged, but can guarantee neither.

Winnie-the-pooh [UNABRIDGED] (2)
Another unabriged edition of "Winnie-the-Pooh" in audio cassette form, this time the "authorized" edition (ie,
authorized by Christopher Robin Milne) read by Peter Dennis. See my above comments about this in the Audio CD's section. Unreviewed
by parents.

Winnie The Pooh (Classic Books on Cassettes Collection) [UNABRIDGED]
At times, Amazon does not do a great job of correctly tying reviews to specific products. What I HOPE we
have here is an unabridged audio cassette collection of both of the Pooh books ("Winnie-the-Pooh" and "The House at Pooh Corner"),
but the reviews seem to refer to different editions. I'm not sure which is which. If you are interested in buying a collection
of audio cassettes of the Pooh stories, take a look at this one, but be extremely careful to read the entire page and make your
own decision about what this product actually contains.

Winnie the Pooh Soft 'n Silly: Pooh
As a parent myself, I absolutely refuse to put toys up for sale that: make noise, require batteries, look dangerous,
or are otherwise irritating, faddish, or high-tech. My son likes it when I play with him, and just does not care about his toys, except
as props so that Mommy, Daddy or big sister will play with him. I'm sticking with things I know kids like, cannot break easily, are easy
to clean up, and (hopefully) are as inoffensive as possible. This toy is a stuffed Pooh. Should work like all other stuffed toys.
